An update on where we’ve been and where we are headed this week in terms of records.

The hottest official temperature for May is 34.1C set on May 28th, 1983.
We won’t be getting anywhere near that Monthly record, at least I hope not, but it’s worth noting. We are into 4 or 5 days of potentially record setting weather. Looking back at the new Airport, Old Airport “A”, Redford, City, and Beaver Creek stations to 1900.

May 4: The current record since 1993 is 26.3C in 1998. All time is 29.4C in 1915 at Beaver Creek.

Temp was 27.6C beat 1998, not 1915.

May 5: The current record since 1993, 23.7C in 1998. The all time 30.6C in 1915 at Beaver Creek.
Temp was 31.0C

May 6: The current record since 1993, 23.3C in 1995. The all time 29.4C in 1915 at Beaver Creek.
Temp was 31.7C

So far, an incredible stretch of records broken.

And it might continue:
May 7: The current record since 1993, 22.7C. The all time 28.9C in 1923 and 1969 at Beaver Creek and Redford Stations. Forecast is potentially record breaking 29C.

May 8: The current record since 1993, 20.0C. The all time 30.1C in 1987 at Somass ‘A’ Station. Forecast is not record breaking 28C.

May 9: The current record since 1993, 24.1C. The all time 29.4C in 1906 at Beaver Creek. Forecast is record breaking 30C

And finally…
May 10: The current record since 1993, 23.7C. The all time 29.4C in 1946 at Port Alberni City. Forecast is not record breaking 27C

After that it looks like our early heatwave will break and we will hopefully get some rain by Sunday to moisten the garden and the forest. There is now a High fire rating for our immediate area and moderate for most of the Island, please be careful if you are in the backcountry.
