New Niece, New Sensors!

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Sorry for the absence lately, my brother and sister-in-laws have been blessed with a new baby girl named Hailey! So that has both been very exciting and very time consuming! All is well though and both the new parents and the new baby are extremely well.

More good news to pass along… after a bit of a delay the folks doing research on the Stamp River that will be providing me (you!) with a Solar Radiation sensor are in town and getting about the business of installing all their gear. That should mean that you will see Solar and UV readings on the website as soon as next week.

Hooray for New Stuff, and (little) People!

No rain since July 5

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

It’s been two weeks since we had any rain at all. Fire rating is extreme and there is no rain in the forecast for at least another 4 or 5 days, probably more.

I’m not sure what the longest streak without rain is, but I’m sure Environment Canada will be on the news telling us that sooner rather than later.

On the brighter side, California is starting to cool off, so that means the Hawaii Mars might be back as soon as this weekend.

The solar radiation sensor has been delayed in getting to me but I’m told it should be here by the end of the month at the latest.

Don’t forget about the Garage Sale this Saturday!

UPDATE: Learn something new every day.

Was looking at the latest update on Arctic Sea Ice Conditions. Aside, very interesting report, they say the ice is moving differently this year due to the weather and it’s causing a less severe melting regime, however, the ice as a whole is all very thin, even closest to the North Pole.

But anyway.. what I learned was this little tidbit:

The direction of the wind is determined from Buys Ballot’s Law, which states that if you are standing with your back to the wind in the Northern Hemisphere, low pressure will be on your left, and high pressure will be on your right.

It makes sense, if you remember what direction low pressure systems spin (counter-clockwise).. but this is a much more practical way of figuring out where the “eye” is. :)
