Big Change in the forecast

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Good News! The model just did a big right turn…

Now instead of heavy rain and snow for the weekend, they’re predicting much less precipitation (only 50mm from tonight to Midnight Saturday, half what it was saying before), and instead a bit of a cold snap over the weekend. Getting down to around -5 to -10.

We’ll keep an eye on things here and see how it all shakes out. Obviously the forecasters are going to be having a real tough time with this one as well.

Major Snow or Rain for New Years?

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

The forecast model is predicting heavy rain or snow for the 31st. Hard to say at this point what type it will be as the forecast temperature is hovering right near 0. It will probably depend on when the event starts and ends. Up to 20mm in a 6hr period is forecast, so make sure your storm drains are cleared, just in case that does all come as rain.

Before that though, tomorrow we should get a bunch of precipitation as well… and again… type will likely be determined by start and end time as well as how close you are to the Inlet or Ocean.

UPDATE: The latest forecast model has another rain/snow event happening tomorrow but A BIGGER ONE delivering up to 50mm/cm of rain/snow between Thursday and Friday.

Just keep digging…. we’ll get out eventually. :)

UPDATE: Just looking at the latest forecast model… it says betwen 4PM today (29th) and 4AM Friday, we are to expect 100mm of precipitation, with the majority coming Thursday/Friday. Lets hope that most of that is snow, cuz if it’s rain, we’re looking at possibile flooding and/or outages from heavy/melting snow, etc etc etc.

LAST UPDATE: The forecast model has moderated a little bit. We are now to expect around 80mm of precip between now and Friday Afternoon. Still a lot, but better than 100.

Merry Christmas!

To everyone out there… I hope you are having a wonderful Christmas. And a white one at that!

Christmas Flurries

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

It seems that flurries are the thing this week, including through Christmas. It’s funny that any other year, we’d all be hoping and wishing for a white Christmas just because it’s so beautiful and appropriate. This year though, I sense a little fatigue. :)

I hope everyone has a wonderful few days.. luckily the roads are mostly clear now so we can all get out and do the things we need to do before the Big Day. Lots of sledding and skiing and hot chocolate can’t be all bad.

Ongoing Storm

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

This post will stay on here for the next 24 hours in order for people to see updates… please do use the comments to tell us how you’re doing.

As of 9:00 the Power is out in North Port, 1329 Hydro customers affected.

The Pac Weather Center seems to be updating their forecast on an almost 30 minute basis right now.

We have 2 inches of snow here so far and a ton coming down. I have a friend in Kyuquot (West Coast, North of Clayoquot Sound… at the mouth of Quatsino Sound)… they have 4 inches and the wind at the Quatsino lighthouse is 45knots. Blizzard conditions.

Update: I’m off to bed folks. Stay safe and warm.

UPDATE: I had 13cm this morning and another 5 this morning since 8AM.
