A Little more Summer, before Winter hits

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Today should be another beautiful day!

Enjoy it, because by the looks of it Friday and Saturday we should have a good’ol Sou’wester blow through. The weather charts yesterday indicated Storm to Hurricane force winds offshore, so we could get some gusty winds here as well.

I’m pleased to announce a new feature on the website as well.

If you go Here (which is under Weather Archive—> Station Almanacs—> Monthly Tabular Data). You can select a date range and view the hourly reports from that time range.

Please be gentle with it, I don’t have all the bugs quite worked out yet, so if you put in a range that spans more than about 3 months you will likely not get any response as it’s too big. But it’s nice way to see what our past weather has been like. The “Highs and Lows” displayed are over the past 60mins before the displayed hour.

Sinlaku is that you?

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

I haven’t been paying attention to the satellite imagery lately, so I’m not sure if the system we’re getting tonight is the remants of Typhoon Sinlaku?

Anyone know?

Look at that temperature profile over the past 24hr. Ha… 4C difference… gotta love that return to the sou’wester!

New View Coming

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

Well, it’s almost the equinox. And that means two things… our garden is bursting with tomatoes, peppers, carrots and parsnips… AND it’s time to shift the webcam until next spring.

I’m going to turn the camera around to face North. This is necessary because the sun will soon have moved far enough south that it is in the picture, and it will etch the camera!

So.. be prepared for a change of view. I’m hopeful we’ll be able to see the mountains, maybe even Mt. Klitsa and the Comox Glacier.

UPDATE: Hmmm… if those two fir trees weren’t there we could have seen Mt. Klitsa. Oh well. ;)

Hurricane Ike

Friday, September 12th, 2008

The weather is beautiful here.

It’s not so beautiful in Texas.

Please… safest wishes for the people of Galveston, Port Arthur and Houston, Texas. The Storm surge is already near 50 year record levels and the eye has not come on shore yet.

Happy Fall Fair!

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Hey looks like nice weather for the Fair!

If you would like to come say hi, there is a good chance I’ll be at the Climate Change booth (as part of my duties with the Climate Change Committee).

I’ll be there tonight between about 8 and 10 probably.

See you there!

Oh, and two weather/climate related things to keep an eye on. Hurricane Ike is a monster roaring towards the Caribbean, hopefully he weakens before he gets there. Hurricane Hannah should cause some trouble for New York City and Atlantic Canada in the next few days. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov And the Arctic ice sheet is edging closer to a 2nd all-time low. http://www.nsidc.com
