Data is back online!

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Hooray.

I wish I was strong enough to wield our 40ft ladder all by myself, cuz I’m getting pretty good at swapping these silly parts in and out.

Data is all back online. Thank you for your patience. I’ll let y’all know when I get the “extreme weather” hardened replacement part from Davis.

Looks like the temperature has leveled off…

Partial Data back – Units coming…

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Hey everyone.

A minor breakthrough.. I restarted the weather software on my server a couple times… and now it seems to be sending everything through again except for temperature, rain, and humidity related readings. The Wview software is definitely freaking out from the oddball values the sensor is sending, I’ll put a bug report into the software developer, at least I know he will work on a fix that will work. So ignore the bogus temperature and rain readings especially. :)

I’m making some good progress on Units conversion process… fingers are crossed. I will be on the roof tomorrow, rain or shine.

UPDATE: I’m up on the roof.

Davis Fights Back

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

OK, so I spent a good 2 hours talking to Davis (actually, my wife did… she’s the customer service guru in the family… I was there for technical background :) ).

In the end, one of the managers admitted that there was no hope of us ever getting a “new” in the box station. We’re stuck with replacement parts.

In the end, the manager blamed our rough sea bourne weather for the problems with the temp/humidity sensor. I have my doubts… but, they’re going to send me a new fandangled part that is “hardened” for our “extreme” environment.

We’ll see what happens. It’s on it’s way here now, but in the meantime I still plan on getting back on the roof tomorrow and reinstalling the old sensor that should bring back all the data except for intermittent 100% humidity readings.

Thank you again for your patience… if it makes you feel better, I find this extremely frustrating and embarrassing… so I’m working to get it fixed ASAP.

Update: Since the site is mostly “down” anyway, I’m going to take the opportunity to upgrade the blogging software behind it (Wordpress). So over the next few hours you might see some weirdness happen as files are updated and whatnot. No worries, it will all be back up shortly. I’ll update again when I’ve completed the upgrade.

Update 2: Wordpress is now upgraded… Maybe I’ll work on some of that “customization” stuff now as well.

Update 3: I’m working on implementing the Unit changing system… you may notice very brief weirdness if you try the new “Current Units are…” menu. Exciting times!

Davis is Goin’ Down

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

I may have to drive down to California myself and smack some Davis Instruments people around. After waiting for 3 weeks for my new temperature/humidity sensor to come. I installed it 2 days ago… and now it’s “flatlined”. I get no readings for the temp or humidity and it seems to have messed up my software so that all the graphs are flatlined.

I have to say I’m at my wits end with this company. I’ve swapped every single component of the station except for the rain gauge… some twice… and still it refuses to work reliably.

I’m going to have to demand a full replacement system, shipped at their cost, Express. Because this is simply insane. These are supposed to be precision instruments, and I’ve had nothing but trouble.

I’m very sorry for the inconvenience this is going to cause people coming to this site. If you would like to help, please, leave a comment or send an email that I could pass along to Davis Instruments. Perhaps if they got the idea that this was a little more than just a guy with a weather hobby, they’d be more inclined to act quickly.

In the meantime, I’ll try to get up on the roof… AGAIN.. on Halloween to put back the old sensor… at least when that part was malfunctioning it didn’t take everything else down with it.

ARRRRRRRGHHHH… ok, I’m done venting.

UPDATE: All the data is currently offline. Sorry folks. I’ll be up on the roof Wednesday at the latest.

Full moon

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Get ready for halloween… clear skies once the fog lifts should make for a beautiful harvest moon.

Look for frost tonight.
