Cold Weather around the world.

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Vancouver Island hasn’t been the only place that has received colder than normal temperatures and more snow than in the past few years.

East of the Rockies… temperatures are in the deep freeze. It was 54 with the windchill in Edmonton.. and blizzrads raged across the prairies. Today, Eastern Canada is getting flash frozen by Kids are playing and there is a snowman competition.

And the Chinese New Year has started off very white and cold in Southern China causing transportation chaos and energy shortages.

So in short.. we’re not the only ones enjoying the snow!

How Much Snow?

Friday, January 25th, 2008

It seems to be unanimous… we’re going to get some snow over the next few days. How Much? EC says 5-10cm tomorrow… will we get that? More? Less? All Weekend? Will there be school on Monday?

Who knows!

All we can do is wait for the white fluffies to start falling from the sky.

Update: (Jan 29,12:42PM)
Finally!! We got lots of snow. There was about 18cm, 8″ this morning when I woke up. (6th and Redford). There is apparently lots more out at the lake… over a foot (30cm) by some accounts.

To answer Cindy in the Comments… the snow has stopped, and the major streets in Port Alberni are plowed and wet now. The sun has come out, so it has melted what was left from the scrape.

You may notice that the Weather Camera has changed slightly. I have installed a filter (ND2 Gradual Grey) that has made the picture much brighter! I’ve also received my replacement camera (because I burned the lens of the first one… those are the pink streaks you see).

A wonderful day! Hope everyone enjoys the snow and sun! I know my kids are enjoying it!

Oh! And if you’re on Facebook! Feel Free to join the group I’ve just created. It’s called Vancouver Island Weather Nuts! Add your friends!

Oops! No Forecast!

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

It looks like Environment Canada has updated their webpages! Nice update actually.. but that’s why there is no forecast at the bottom of this box like there should be this morning. I’ll have to revamp my grabber code to get the text forecast from a different source. It might take me a few days. In the meantime, the direct link still works.

Still mighty cold out there! And it looks like we might be getting some snow in the next couple days! Saturday is calling for real snowfall.

Update: Forecast is back.. let me know if you see anything funky but it seems to be working well. They didn’t change too much thankfully, just the URL and a bit of the preamble.

So is this a Cold Snap?

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

I don’t really know what constitutes a “Cold Snap” in the official sense of the term. But I do know it’s been cold for quite a few days now! Great Winter weather. Has made for some beautiful sunsets and alpen glow on Mt. Arrowsmith!

Here’s hoping the rains don’t come on Thursday or Sunday as forecast!

YouTube Videos and Chilly Weather

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

EC is calling for a low of -7 Sunday night! Cold all week. Quite the wintery weather we’re having… it made for a beautiful sunset this evening, especially with the moon rising in the East. Should see the moon on the webcam tonight if the fog holds off long enough.

So change of plans on the videos… way too much work for me to make a new page everyday. So instead, I’ve created a YouTube Channel especially for Alberniweather.

There will be a link to it from the Webcam page and in the menu as well. You can see the latest daily, weekly, and monthly videos there. If you want higher quality videos though, or you want to download them to keep… I will still have the videos on alberniweather. Just click into the file listings on the Webcam page and find the movie you want inside the corresponding folder.
