Rainfall Warning in Effect – Advisory for Highway 4 – Shakeout Thursday

Rainfall Warning Issued – but Heaviest on North Island

Environment Canada issued a Rainfall Warning yesterday afternoon. The majority of the rain is expected on northern sections of the Island including Gold River but we are still expected to get up to 50mm of Rain in Port Alberni Tuesday and possibly another 40mm on Wednesday.

For Port Alberni – expect heavy rain to begin this afternoon after 3PM. That is when the meat of the system is expected to cross the South Island as you can see below.

Moderate rain in the 3PM-4PM hour across most of the central South Island including Port Albenri and Nanaimo.

Port Alberni is expected to just be on the edge of the heaviest rain later this evening. So there is a chance it misses us to the North, or if it slides a little south we could get closer to that 40mm and more into Wednesday market for the day. Below is the picture for 9PM-10PM showing that edge Port Alberni will be on. How much rain we get will be determined by how far this heavy rain slides south and for how long.

Heavy Rain just reaching Port Alberni and the Alberni Valley from the north in the 8-9PM hour. Other sections of the South Island remain dry.

Most of the rain for Wednesday will fall before sunrise and it should lighten up on Wednesday morning but it will continue to be wet with showers throughout the day Wednesday and into Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

We should dry out completely by Thursday night.

Get out your swim gear! 🙂

Great BC Shakeout Thursday 10:19AM

Alberniweather will be participating in the great BC Shakeout earthquake and emergency drill on Thursday Oct 19 at 10:19AM. You will see this a blog posted to this page warning of an Earthquake and potential Tsunami. This will be a drill and a practice run for me to make sure my blog is ready to provide information in that case. I’ll also be doing the Drop, Cover and Hold On procedure IRL. 🙂

I recommend tuning into The Peak 93.3FM in Port Alberni to hear their version of the drill too. It’s good for all of us to be prepared and know what to expect in case of a real emergency.
