Higher than normal tides possible Wednesday and Thursday

We are getting a fairly run-of-the mill system and rain today but it will be combining with seasonally high tides that could cause some minor flooding along the coast lines.

Tide Gauges already showing higher-than-predicted levels

The tide gauge at Port Alberni is already showing a 20-40cm surge compared to the forecast tides for the day.

a screenshot from the tides Canada website shows a red line with the observed level of water with a black line showing the forecast. It is oscillating up and down over the hours of the day.

The high tide today is 3.75m and tomorrow is 3.82m. Water levels at 8:50AM are currently at about 33cm (13in) higher than the predicted tide level. The high tide today is 11:26AM and tomorrow is 12:07PM.

Lots of rain across the Island Wednesday and peaking Thursday night

Expect rain to continue through the day Wednesday combined with gusty winds on all parts of the Island.

There could be a short break early Thursday morning between waves but winds and rains will pick up again Thursday morning and peak Thursday night around 7PM as the low finally moves onshore.

Weekend looks good.

We might see some lingering showers Friday and possibly some instability and lightning on the coast or mountain ranges but it will generally dry out for the weekend (Environment Canada disagrees at the moment but I think it’ll come around!)
