Updated 5:22PM Monday – Wind Warning Issued for Inland, West, East and South Vancouver Island

Updated 5:20PM

WIND WARNING ENDED.

We didn’t end up getting anything major in the afternoon. The wind stayed to the South of us.

Updated 11:15AM

Wind Warning updated mentioning the low will move just north of Port Alberni, we may see much stronger wind than this morning.

Issued at 2017-11-13 17:55 UTC by Environment Canada:
Wind warning continued for:
East Vancouver Island, B.C. (081300)
Inland Vancouver Island, B.C. (081500)
Current details:
Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring.

An intense low pressure system will move across Vancouver Island just north of Port Alberni late this morning. Ahead of this low, strong southerly winds are expected to the south of the track of the low, which means almost the entire south coast.

Southerly winds of 70 to 80 km/h have developed over exposed coastal sections this morning. The winds will ease later this afternoon as the low weakens and moves out of the region.

High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.

Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds.

Updated 10:45PM

Here is what it looks oike offshore right now in the Wunderground Storm app.  You can see the windstream showing where the low pressure centre currently is.

The question of the day tomorrow will be where that centre makes landfall. It is comes ashore north of Tofino, most of the high winds will be north of Port Alberni and Nanaimo. Around Tofino and it will affect the whole Island and South Coast. South Island or Washington and it will mainly just be Victoria and Tsawassen.

The updated 10:20PM warning has just been issued (it is below). It sounds like they expect the low to come ashore near Tofino around noon.

That is maybe just north and a little sooner than the Uwash Model which has a 988hPa low just offshore of Barkley Sound at 1PM and coming ashore between 1-4PM.

The low (the rough circle) is just south of Port Alberni at 4PM which would mean calm winds for us.

However, if the low follows a more northerly path, like IC predicts, we in Port Alberni could be on the “strong side” and get significant, 70-90kph wind gusts.

So be prepared.

We will get another update tomorrow morning around 10:30 which should give us a good idea where the wind will be.  If you are taking a ferry, definitely get out in the morning.  Expect delays and cancelations anytimes after noon on all routes.
