WHEN WILL SUMMER GET HERE?? — Rain Rain Go Away.

Dan asks in the comments: “When do you see the weather changing? Any stretches of sunshine coming our way before July gets here?”

I have a feeling he’s asking about those real stretches of warm, even hot, dry weather where you come out the other side actually wishing for a cool rain storm so you can get a good night sleep.

Don’t expect anything like that for another few weeks at least.

The long range models still have us in a back-and-forth cool, warm, cool… rain, dry, rain pattern until near the end of the month.

Long range forecasts are often made to be broken, but I there has been a lot of agreement around the forecast world that June on the West Coast will be its standard, dreary less-than-hoped-for start to summer.

I’m really hoping hoping the cold waters off our shores let up a bit as I do think they’re having a real impact on our early-summer temperatures. People often associate weather with common holidays, so since the next one in Canada Day on July 1st. Here are the highs I’ve recorded for July 1st from Environment Canada (pre-2006) and my station (2006 and on):

1997: 18.3C
1998: 28.3C
1999: 16.3C
2000: 16.2C
2001: 24.1C
2002: 18.6C
2003: 19.6C
2004: 26.0C
2005: 20.1C
2006: 30.7C
2007: 25.8C
2008: 29.2C
2009: 25.7C
2010: 15.9C
2011: 17.4C

No wonder we’ve been complaining these past couple of years… you have to go back over 10 years to 1999 and 2000 to find temperatures as cold for the Canada Day weekend as we have had the past couple years and are setting up for again this year.

The good news though is that no matter what year its been, even if Canada Day isn’t great, we always get a shot of hot weather within a week of the holiday… and it very rarely rains on that holiday. (only once in the past 5 years)

  1. Unfortunately, according to Brett Anderson at Accuweather, we might be in for another Bummer Summer!  🙁
