Weekend Weather Adventure – More possible snow Tues Morn. Then drier?

So we had quite the weekend, but not really in the way we had anticipated. We got a little wind, but compared to Victoria and Vancouver, nothing too strong.

No, our story was unexpected (though it perhaps should not have been) snow.

This was the scene on Sunday afternoon:

This heavy snow was completely missed by the forecast, and reports quickly emerged that it was even worse on the Hump and Sutton pass.

Indeed, the day before I was stuck 5km West of the West Bay hotel on Sproat Lake due to a minor car accident caused by a sudden onslaught of snow that looked like this:

If you are on the roads this week. Be prepared. We came out ok because we had good winter tires and a pretty decent little car in the snow. But others on the highway with us were completely caught out with bald tires, no traction, and damage because of it. This could repeat Tuesday and Wednseday.

I believe the main reason for this snowfall was the fact that we were just slightly removed from the main force of the weekend storms to our south. So we did not get the winds mixing down into the lower atmosphere like our more southerly neighbours. However, we still got heavy precipitation, which started as rain, and eventually dragged the temperature down from 2-3C to 1C… and snow.

Will it happen again? Yes, I believe it could.

We will get heavy precipitation Tuesday morning.

And we might get more Wednesday morning as well, though it looks like a weaker system.

By Thursday the jetstream is starting to look like it’s going to shift back into kinked mode. Here it is today:

And Monday:

We will see if this long range forecast comes true… But if it does it would mean a quick end to our return to normal wet, and snowy, winter weather, and back to a dry pattern.

The good news is, our snowpack got a bunch of help with these couple of storms. The little blue line finally has a tiny uptick to cheer for:

Gotta start somewhere. Happy Monday all and safe driving!
