Or… maybe not.

According to here, a heat index of 130˚F, or 54˚C was recorded. The extreme heat index and humidity is due to all of the flooding, combined with the 100+˚F (37˚C) heat wave that has been sweeping the United States.

The heat has killed 13 people so far.

Nothing of that sort is going to be happening here. But I guess we can be a little glad that at least we’re not experiencing deadly weather.

The weather has been pretty deadly up in the Arctic too… but not for humans, for ice.

According to the just-released July NSIDC report Arctic Sea Ice coverage is now tracking below the trend that led to the record minimum in 2007.

Here’s that trend line:

Whether it hits a record minimum will depend on weather patterns up there through August and September but the stage is certainly set. Santa Claus has no doubt been in shorts and tee-shirts as temperatures at the North Pole have been 6-8˚C above normal (11-14˚F) in July.

Don’t worry… I see hope on the horizon.  Give it a few more days and I’ll feel confident enough maybe to say our summer is finally on it way!

  3. A little historical note:  last year on this date the high was 29.4C, in 2009 it was 32.6C.  At this point, I’ll be thrilled if we get to the 25C that is now forecast for Saturday!
