Tuesday break – Wednesday rain – NDTR Orange Shirt Day Mixed – Weekend nice

Some sun today

We should see the sun peak out from the clouds today as we find ourselves between waves of rain. You can see in the picture below that by this afternoon, a new wave is setting up offshore for Wednesday and a 2nd wave is behind that one for Thursday/Friday.

Wednesday events and weather timing

There are a number of events occurring all week for the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. There was one at WCGH on Monday. The biggest on Wednesday will be the ceremony to unveil the new name of c̓uumaʕas Tsuma-as Elementary School (pronounced “SOO-mahs”). Lots of information about the ceremony at the Ha-shilth-sa and the AVNews.

Expect rain throughough the morning Wednesday starting at 5AM, heaviest around 7AM, and tapering off in the 8-9AM period (pictured below)

From then on expect showers but it should gradually dry out toward noon.

The 10-11AM picture below shows light showers in the Valley and scattered pockets of rain or showers elsewhere. There might be some blustery winds with the rain as well particularly closer to the water.

Rain will return full force throughout the Island starting at sundown on Wednesday. 6-7PM image below.

Thursday – National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

Expect very strong periods of rain overnight especially around midnight in the Port Alberni area. By sunrise on Thursday the skies should start to clear as the front moves off to the south and east. Hopefully that means the walk from Harbour Quay starting at 11AM to Maht-Mahs Gym at Tseshaht reserve by 1PM will be OK. There is some rain expected in the 1PM to 2PM timeframe.

Here is the 5-6AM and 1-2PM picture below.

It should taper off before 3PM and the rest of the day and evening should stay dry.

Totals

By 5PM Wednesday we should have received about 15mm of rain in Port Alberni according to the picture below.

By 5PM Thursday we’ll add another 30-40mm onto that total. Significant 24hr accumulations in the mountains of over 100mm. As explained above, most of that will fall in the very early morning.

Weekend looking dry

From Thursday evening on it looks like we should stay dry through the weekend until a system slides down our way on Monday. It should be a nice start to October.

Take care out there.
