Threat of Snow remains – Drive Carefully

Final Update 10:30AM – Snow threat waning.

It looks like things are starting to calm as the rain lightens up.  It’s still cold enough (1.4ºC) that if we get another strong bit of precipitation it will fall as wet snow.  And some areas will still be seeing snow now.

It will rain off and all all day and night until afternoon Friday.  Then another system comes in Saturday. All Rain.

Unfortunately, nothing stuck at Alberniweather HQ, so no winner in the snow contest yet! If you have some fun pictures of the snow don’t hesitate to tweet or Facebook them or email and I’ll share them for others to see. 🙂

Happy Thursday!

Update 9:30AM – Snowfall begins, how much will stick?

Snow has begun to fall in all areas of the Valley now.  But it is only sticking in isolated pockets.  The roads remain bare and wet in town from as far as I have heard but other areas may not be.  Drive Carefully.

Will this actually turn into measurable snow and a winner in the snow contest!? Laura J. and Lynn Ruttan are in the running today with guesses of 5:30AM and 3:05PM.  I will still be surprised if any of it sticks long enough to be measurable, but it’s certainly possible.

Stay Tuned! 🙂

Environment Canada’s Special Weather Statement is below – Sutton Pass and some other locations around the Island are seeing flurries at this hour.  The intensity should pick up later in the morning.  Stay Safe out there.

5:46 AM PST Thursday 17 December 2015
Special weather statement in effect for:

  • Inland Vancouver Island

Snow is possible today over many south coast locales….

Precipitation from the next Pacific front will arrive over the south coast this morning. Temperatures will be low enough that rain will be mixed with snow over communities near the coast. The major urban areas of the south coast will likely see their first snowflakes of the season. Accumulations near the coast are expected to be minimal and precipitation will change completely to rain by this afternoon.

However, where cold air remains trapped over inland regions such as Howe Sound, Whistler, Inland Vancouver Island, and the eastern Fraser Valley, the snow will last longer and snowfall accumulations are forecast. At least 5 to 10 cm is expected over Inland Vancouver Island, Howe Sound and Whistler. Over the eastern Fraser Valley snow will begin later this afternoon and continue this evening.
