Strong Earthquakes Rattle Haida Gwaii – Advisory for #Alberni

Final UPDATE 11:30PM:

I’ll be turning the updates back on for weather now. Thanks everyone for bearing with the site. Hope it was useful. This was a great test and I’ve learned a lot so next time I’ll be able to keep going a little better.

Tsunami Advisory remains 11:17PM in Effect for Port Alberni

A TSUNAMI ADVISORY MEANS THAT A TSUNAMI CAPABLE OF PRODUCING
STRONG CURRENTS OR WAVES DANGEROUS TO PEOPLE IN OR VERY NEAR
THE WATER IS EXPECTED. SIGNIFICANT WIDESPREAD INUNDATION
IS NOT EXPECTED FOR AREAS UNDER AN ADVISORY. CURRENTS
MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO SWIMMERS… BOATS… AND COASTAL
STRUCTURES AND MAY CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE ARRIVAL.

I will keep the weather updates turned off for a while.

Major danger likely past. But this was likely the closest Port Alberni has ever gotten to actually using its Tsunami Warning system for real.

12cm Wave recorded at Tofino according to CKNW.

At this point we should not have a Warning. However, stay away from the water. Advisory is in effect and the Somass river will likely have strange currents (flowing backwards and things like it did after the Japan Quake)

Great Map of Tsunami effects across the Ocean.

Lots of aftershocks

News is reporting that this is one of the largest Earthquakes in BC history. Lucky it did not hit major area. Hope folks in Haida Gwaii are OK.

Go to http://www.tsunami.gov for best updates.

Haida Gwaii has seen 8ft wave. I would stay away from the river as you might find strange behaviour on the Somass as we saw with the Japan earthquake.

More Aftershocks. Check them out here.

Check TWITTER @Alberniweather for more updates.

First Tsunami Wave would arrive in Tofino at 10:09PM PDT. Low lying areas are being evacuated there and in Port Hardy.

Note to myself:
When website is overloaded:
– Turn off Weather updates from weather station
– Turn off tags in header.php and singleheader.php

There has been a strong 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake near Sandspit on Haida Gwaii. There has been an aftershock of 5.3 closer to Prince Rupert.

There is a Tsuanmi Warning issued for the North Coast of British Columbia from the Northern Tip of Vancouver Island to Alaska.

There is NO Tsunami Warning for Port Alberni or the West Coast of Vancouver Island. But we should remain vigilant until the threat of any wave passes. This means overnight.

I will update this post as I learn more and get more information.

  1. we felt the house sway, all our hanging lights were swaying for about a minute in Kamloops at 8:10 tonight! Wow! hope all is safe in your areas

  2. Felt nothing out here in Ukee. I’ve been listening to the radios most of the evening, and did have to give an update to PEP via HF radio. Otherwise, quiet for us. Tofino got a little excited initially but they’re calm now. Still under advisory as of this writing.

    1. Mike, any news on what they actually did in Tofino, because we’ve heard here that they “evacuated”. I’ve been in Tofino during a Tsunami warning and did not experience that.

  3. Various reports stating wave height was this or wave height was that. I’m thinking social media is skewing things… ie 8ft wave in Haida Gwaii. In the bulletin that issued the tsunami warning for Hawaii.. it reports only a 20cm wave at Langara Point. Global News now saying a 7ft wave heading for Hawaii. Numerous coastal stations heading down towards California only reporting max 20cm waves.

  4. Neah Bay reported 10cm at 530 UTC which would be almost an hour ago (1030pm our time). Looking like most of the energy went out offshore.

  5. Warning downgraded to advisory for SE Alaska and Northern BC.

Advisory cont’d for Coastal California to northern Vancouver Island.

Advisory modified to include the original warning area of northern Vancouver Island to SE Alaska.
