Updated 8:30AM snow continues here but Nanaimo is crazy.

UPDATE: East Vancouver Island snowfall warning updated

Warnings

East Vancouver Island
8:19 AM PST Monday 24 February 2014
Snowfall warning for
East Vancouver Island continued

5 to 15 cm of snow is forecast for today.

This is a warning that significant snowfall is occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..listen for updated statements.

Another Pacific frontal system will move across the South Coast today and produce more snow over the region. Over East Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands a total of 10 to 15 cm of snow is expected today while over remaining regions 5 to 10 cm of accumulation is expected. Late this afternoon or early this evening milder Pacific air will invade and cause the snow to change over to rain in most areas.

All VIU Campuses except Powell River are closed today. Schools in Port Alberni and SD 70 are OPEN.

Nanaimo has received over 40 cm of snow this weekend. Likely more now. If you can avoid driving out of the Valley, it would be a smart decision.

Port Alberni will get light snow all day. Expect up to 5cm here. Expect up to 15cm on the East Coast.

We should warm up by Tuesday afternoon.

Stay safe and have fun out there.

  1. Its funny they have us under a snowfall warning and we get a steady snowfall, but it only accumulates to a dusting. They drop the warning, and I wake up to almost 3 inches of fresh snow at my house. Someone passed “Ball dropping 101” with flying colours.

  2. I think it would be an understatement to say the air mass has been extremely difficult for the models or any forecasters to get a handle on to figure out if it was cold enough to snow. The differences in accumulation according to elevation have been significant too.
