Rain ending Wednesday morning – Returns with Wind warning tonight.

The rain is coming down hard right now in Port Alberni. However, the model expects the main band of rain to move south before 10AM as you can see below.

There might be light drizzle after that but it should stay dry for most of the day.

Wind Warning Issued for East Coast

Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for the East Coast of the Island north of Nanoose Bay. Here is a portion of it:

Remarks: Strong southeast winds will develop over parts of the South Coast this afternoon as a vigorous frontal system approaches Vancouver Island. Winds will rise to southeast 70 km/h early this evening over northern sections of the Sunshine Coast and East Vancouver Island ahead of the front and then ease overnight with the passage of the system.

Very heavy rain tonight starting around 5PM

Expect very heavy rain tonight as this new system moves through. The rain will begin to move onto the Island around 4 or 5PM and envelop the entire Island except the rain shadow around Parksville by 7PM.

Heaviest rains in Port Alberni look to be expected around 1AM with 1 hour accumulation of up to about 10mm.

The front is expected to pass and the rain end in Port Alberni by 4AM Thursday and clear the Island by mid-morning. Hopefully we’ll see some clearing skies as the sun rises on National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

Big rain totals.

Between 5AM Wednesday and 5AM Thursday the model expects around 40mm of rain to fall in Port Alberni. A significant amount in total, but thanks to the break between the rain this morning and overnight Wednesday it should not lead to flooding. However, stay prepared, especially overnight on Wednesday.

Truth and Reconciliation events

There are a number of events taking place. The unveiling ceremony at 10:30AM this morning of the new name of c̓uumaʕas Tsuma-as Elementary School (pronounced “SOO-mahs”) looks like it will be after the rain stops. We will hope! Lots of information about the ceremony at the Ha-shilth-sa and the AVNews.

Same goes for the walk from Harbour Quay to Tseshaht tomorrow. See you there. ❤️
