Port Alberni and multiple locations break new records for June 5

It’s official.  The Airport got to a sweltering 34.5ºC on Sunday which easily broke the all-time record since 1900 for June 5 which was 33.5º C in 2003.  It got even hotter in the City, Alberniweather recorded a high of 35.1ºC, Maquinna got to 35.4º C, Alberni Elementary 35.1ºC and hottest of all, the Neptune station above Canal Beach at 36.4ºC.

Screen Shot 2016-06-06 at 8.38.11 AMThere were multiple records broken across the province.  You can check out a full list here. Many stations in the province stretch back into the 1800s and a bunch of those records fell.  The top two longest record breakers on the list was Agassiz which has records to 1889.  They reached 33.4º C breaking a 2003 record for the day.  The longest one on the list, Pitt Meadows, with records to 1874, reached 32.5º C again breaking a record set in 2003.

The hottest spot in Canada was Lytton which got up to a nasty 38.5º C breaking a 1969 record by more than 3º C.  They have records going back to 1921.

We should get up to 30ºC again today but then it will cool slightly Tuesday and then down to 24º C on Wednesday with possibly some showers in the afternoon and a chance of showers Thursday and again Friday.  We get into a darker but drier pattern for the weekend.

The Fire Danger is currently at High for Beaver Creek/the Alberni Valley and is forecast to stay there.
