Mostly Dry and cold week – chance of flurries – 2nd Coldest End – Renos moving along.

The new closet. Under the stairs... shelves. Space to actually move things and see devices and organize! Still a lot of wires, but nothing some twist ties can't take care of!

Just a short update today.

The forecast is looking mostly dry and cold with just a few light flurries today possible. On Friday there is a system set to come through.  That system looks rainy at this point, not snowy.  But it is a ways off yet, so things may change.

2nd coldest end to November and start to December ever recorded:

I almost forgot to mention!  We have set a few cold records over the weekend.  Data here.

Saturday November 29th:  -7.5º C was the third coldest temperature for November 29th since 1900.  #1 was -17.0º C at Robertson and #2 was -16.8º C at Somass both in 1985.  So this was the 2nd coldest November 29th ever recorded.

Sunday November 30th:  -9.6ºC was the third coldest November 29th since 1900.  #1 was -15.6º C at Somass and #2 was  -13.5º C at Robertson both in 1985. So this was the 2nd coldest November 30th ever recorded.

Monday December 1st:  -7.9º C was the third coldest November 29th since 1900.  #1 was -15.5º C at Robertson and #2 was  -14.8º C at Somass both in 1985. So this was the 2nd coldest December 1st ever recorded.

Network and Renos moving along – Data and Webcams back online.

You likely noticed that the webcam hadn’t been online for a number of days and that the conditions were being interrupted.

That should be all done now.  Here is a look at how things have changed in the depts of the Alberniweather HQ basement.

Before:

The old closet: It looked ok from a distance right?
The old closet: It looked ok from a distance right? This is the last remnant of our old basement.  It will now be torn out to make room for a laundry room.
But EVERYTHING was in there, piled on top of everything else.... and wires are EVERYWHERE... also piled on top of themselves.
But EVERYTHING was in there, piled on top of everything else…. and wires are EVERYWHERE… also piled on top of themselves.  Notice the black and green gear resting on the beams above the basement… that’s actually the weather station link to the network!  And the white brick is for a wireless basestation.  Not ideal!

After.

Still a lot more wiring to do to fill in all the ports and put the faceplates on.   Will be shortening a lot of unnecessarily long cables.  Also need a lot more twist ties to make it all clean and professional.  But it is a massive improvement.  If you are wondering what the gear is, from top to bottom:

  • Telus Optik router
  • Apple Airport Express Wireless base station
  • Network switches
  • 2004 Apple Mac Mini (dedicated to running the Webcams – the red and blue wires coming down from just above)
  • Small UPS and power bars

Have a Great Monday all!
