Irony: first day of rain in weeks… Backyard burning ban goes into effect

We are getting a short break from the hot summer weather. The showers will be with us today and most of tomorrow as well. We can expect the warm weather to return late Sunday or on Monday.

I’ll be away until at least Monday so enjoy your weekend!

Almost forgot to include the open fire ban that just went into effect. Campfires are still ok, but no other backyard burning is allowed on the Island:

Effective at noon July 20, the Category 2 open fire and fireworks prohibition will be expanded to all areas within the Coastal Fire Centre jurisdiction, with the exception of Haida Gwaii, to help prevent human-caused wildfires.

Specifically this ban applies to:

the burning of any material, piled or unpiled, smaller than two metres in height and three metres in width, including burning barrels

the use of fireworks and burn barrels of any size of description

stubble or grass fires over an area less than 2,000 square metres

Campfires (1/2 meter x 1/2 meter), campstoves and propane campfires are still permtted.

Category 3 open burning, used for resource management reasons, is still allowed. However, a person conducting an open burn, may only conduct one at a time and must first obtain a burn registration number by calling 1-888 797-1717.
