Happy Winter Solstice – earthquake swarm – half webcam on fritz

Hi all,

Hope your preparations for Christmas are going well.

Today is the first day of Winter!  That means it is also the shortest day of the year and from now on the days (or at least the afternoons for now) will be getting longer!  Yippee!

We don’t have any Wintery weather in the forecast for now, but who knows.  There is lots of snow on the mountains though!

There has been an interesting swarm of earthquakes south of Haida Gwaii in the past day.

Significant size, but likely still an isolated incident.
Significant size, but likely still an isolated incident.

Contrary to popular myth, small earthquakes do not “relieve pressure” for larger earthquakes.  However, just because we have a bunch of earthquakes all at once it also does not mean we are spoiling for a very large one.  Earthquakes are mostly isolated incidents.  So use this as a reminder to keep your emergency kit well stocked.  But that’s it. 🙂

Finally, I was doing the last bits of cleaning up in our basement with the new setup and when I plugged everything back in the 2nd webcam didn’t reappear.  I’m not sure why but am working on it.  It will be nice to get that 360° lens so I only need one camera but it’s still a ways off.

Oh, and the rain storm delivered around 60mm of rain.  Right on the prediction from the models.  We should stay mostly dry until Tuesday.

  1. Hey Chris I just wanted to take a moment to wish you and yours a happy holiday season and congratulate you on making Port Alberni a better place. Even though I no longer live there I always check your weather site because you offer varying opinions on weather data. I am most sure that will transfer into being a city councillor in PA.

    1. Thanks Tom! I do my best and will continue to try to do my best 🙂 I am very lucky to have so many people come to this site for info. And I’m very lucky to have the opportunity to serve on council. It’s going to be a great year. Merry Christmas to you and all! 🙂
