Fire along river bank – Please be careful!

The Alberni Valley News reports that there was a significant 2 hectare fire started across the river from Port Alberni near the effluent ponds. It started Sunday morning and appears to be out this morning, but there may be hotspots remaining according to citizen reports here.

“The fire appears to have started on the beach by the river.

“Human error appears to be the cause,” Nadig said.

The fire already burned though an area two hectares in size when the News first reported the story Sunday morning.

“I can’t say how big an area was burned,” Nadig said. “One of our guys just did a walk around and said it was a pretty big area.””

Please use this as a warning and reminder that even though we haven’t had the hottest summer, we’ve still had no significant rainfall for many weeks. So the ground is dry and can light on fire if someone is careless.

Were this any other year with 30 degree temperatures and extreme fire conditions this fire would have literally been on our doorstep and threatened the City.
