It is snowing, and hard and all over the Island already this morning.  The UWash model completely missed on this, like big time. So I will move to only the EC forecast.

The road from Port Alberni to Parksville was snow covered almost all the way and snowing pretty hard.

Take care out there.  EC now says to expect 20cm through Saturday

5:20AM Friday –  Snowfall Warning Issued for East Vancouver Island, Victoria and Gulf Islands 10-20cm by Saturday Morning!

Last nights UWash  model indicates snow will begin on the south Island (Duncan) area after 11AM and gradually spread north.  More details to come…. updated snowfall warning below.

4:50 AM PST Friday 03 February 2017
Snowfall warning in effect for:

East Vancouver Island
Snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm are expected by Saturday morning.

A weak warm front is expected to move north from Washington State this morning bringing bands of light snow to the Lower Mainland and Southern Vancouver Island. The warm front will be followed closely by a low pressure system which will bring heavier snow to the area beginning Friday evening. Total snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm are expected by early Saturday morning. Later today the snow may become mixed with or change to rain at lower elevations especially near the Strait of Georgia. Freezing rain is also a possibility in the Fraser Valley on tonight.

Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ec.tempetepacifique-pacificstorm.ec@canada.ca or tweet reports to #BCStorm.

…… original post ……

There is a lot of weather coming.  I want to emphasize that the UWash model has not been perfect this winter at predicting snowfall.  So take these amounts with a grain of salt. I consider them worst case scenarios.  99% of the threat is *outside* Port Alberni. Though the deeper reaches of the Alberni Valley may get larger amounts.

Totals are for up to 10cm by Saturday morning and an additional 20cm in some places (and maybe more) by Sunday morning. Again, this almost totally focused on the East Coast right now and is a worst case scenario.  Check out below for more details and timing!

Flurries begin Friday morning Nanaimo

The first threat of flurries will begin between 7-10AM in the Nanaimo area.

It will then spread northward and across the Island (but not including Port Alberni) over the late morning and noontime.

The main thrust of the snow look to be in areas north of Qualicum up to Campbell River.  Accumulations on the east island might range from a dusting to 5cm of snow.  I think it will be very localized.

Friday evening more serious.

Things will taper off in the afternoon (though maybe not in Courtenay or points north) and then pick up even more in the evening.  The East Coast is really going to get the brunt of it with the whole side of the Island in line for 5cm or more in places.

As you can see below the snow will sweep in and then gradually lessen from north to south by Saturday morning. (Watch out Malahat Drivers)

You should also notice that the Alberni Valley is clear throughout.  No snowfall expected. (Boooo).

Saturday Evening crazy esp Courtenay

So this is where the model really goes a little nuts. So make sure those nuts are salty. Snow returns in the afternoon on Saturday to northern east coast areas but check out the oicture for the 3 hours of 4-7PM!

We see easterly outflow winds pushing heavy snow onto the Nanaimo, Ladysmith and Courtenay areas.  2-4inches (5+cm) in just 3 hours.

Courtenay is predicted to have very heavy snow from 7-10PM Saturday.  Notice this is the only time we really see much in Port Alberni proper.  And not much at that…

24 hour Totals

Here are the totals for between 4AM Friday to Saturday.

And for 4AAM Saturday to Sunday
