There are some unexpected light misting showers falling in Nanaimo as I type this.

Things should dry up completely on the Island by the end of the morning and remain dry through Tuesday.  We have some signficant rain showers coming on Wednesday.  They will start before 5AM.

The rain will continue all day with total accumulations up to 5PM Wednesday of up to 30mm.

The rain should ease a bit Thursday but return on Friday and Saturday.  More details when those dates are closer.

Note on Hurricane Patricia.  It looks like the high mountains around Puerto Vallarta saved the city from  really any ill effects at all. (Including my dad who lives north od the city).  However, the damage from the eye of the storm in the small villages to the south was extreme both from the wind and the storm surge and rain. Credit to the Mexican authorities for their very quick response and evacuations of key areas on very short notice (the storm only existed for 4 days total!). There appear to have been no fatalities from one of the top 3 strongest storms ever recorded on Earth.

The reason for it intensifying so quickly and becoming so strong?  Very warm sea surface temperature in that area of ocean.

Notice the curl of cooler than normal water now left in the wake of Hurricane Patricia…. all that energy went into the storm.
