www.spaceweather.com is reporting:

A coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth on Oct. 24th at approximately 1800 UT (2:00 pm EDT). The impact strongly compressed Earth’s magnetic field, directly exposing geosynchronous satellites to solar wind plasma, and sparked an intense geomagnetic storm. As night fell over North America, auroras spilled across the Canadian border into the contiguous United States.

With the clear nights we’ve been having we could certainly see them too. Check to the North (towards the Beaufort range and Comox Glacier. I have seen northern lights twice, once here in Port Alberni many years ago and once in Nanaimo when I was younger as well.

As for the weather on our stretch of Earth. Look for the fog to burn off hopefully before noon again and then clouds will build in late this afternoon in preparation for a little rain over night and Wednesday. Thursday will be beautiful, Friday and through weekend… not really. 🙂

But don’t fret! Because it’s Snow Contest time! Click the link at the top-left or scroll down to enter your guess for a chance to win Tea and Chocolates from Healthy Habits at the Harbour Quay!

  1. We had the lights out here in Ukee once, many years ago. I got off work and we sat on the deck for the next 3 hours watching them. Awesome!

  2. I saw them frequently growing up in the Okanagan, always in August, and also in Vancouver once, from 12th and Granville.  I saw them here once, the night my son was born on August 16, 1996.
