As of around 5AM this morning, it’s Spring!

Hooray! :+)

We ended up with about 35 hours straight of rain. Not too shabby! Hopefully that replenished some of the snowpack that has been so low this year. It likely won’t be enough to stave off a dry summer, but every little bit helps.

Looks like we’re in for a few days of variable weather, maybe some flurries in the mix, should get some nice sunny breaks on the weekend. Time to get out into the garden!

Oh, and I’m very excited to announce that I made a minor breakthrough in my own learning of all things web-ish. And so within a few days you should be seeing automaticallly updating weather information (without need for a “refresh/reload”) on this site. Hooray!

UPDATE Sorry for the downtime folks, the wind this afternoon caused a 30min power outage and my internet hardware wasn’t happy when the lights came back on.

The Good News though!

In the Current Conditions box you should see a “Turn Off Live Updates” link. From now on, the entire page doesn’t have to refresh in order to get new weather data!! You can turn the updates off and on if you want but really there probably isn’t much reason to. They are not onerous on your computer and only update every 60 seconds anyway. It’s just a little more transparent than it was before.

For now it will only refresh the latest information in the topbox. The data updates from the server every 60 seconds. I will extend the auto-refreshing to other things later on.

Have a great night! Might get some snow this evening/tomorrow morning.

  1. Did you figure out the AJAX stuff, or found something else to pull out of your sleeve? 😉

  2. Yeah, I thought you would like that. I have all my stuff on my one machine, so I have the generous updates every 3 seconds off the weather software. Although I do see a quirk with IE8 on the scripts I have… doesn’t release the green.

  3. ya my software can only generate down to one minute for now, but I’m going to add a module onto it to get that down to 1sec for the important stuff.

  4. Chris, I’m surprised by the wind readings you’re getting. Was there really a gust of 61.16 km/hr yesterday? I’m in North Port above the tracks and there were a few good gusts, but I don’t think they were that strong here.

  5. Ya my wife confirmed it as well. She said she saw 53kph on the station itself so a gust to 61 wouldn’t be too much of a stretch.

It was very short lived, only a few minutes. Then the power went out! 🙂

It looks like the same storm blew through Metro Vancouver about an hour later and knocked out power there too.

  6. I only clocked 31kmh in my little corner of town, but I was along Cameron lake during the peak is it. It was everything in me to hold the camera and keep from being blown in the water on the beach.

  7. Ya I think you’re pretty protected in your little neck-o-the-woods…

I was driving around the Lake at around 4:30 as well and the whitecaps were pretty nasty!
