6.4 Earthquake near Port Alice – No Tsunami Warning

There has been a signficant 6.4 Magnitude Earthquake off the coast of the Island near Port Alice/Kyuquot.

No Tsunami watches or warnings have been issued.

Local Media are advising people to stay away from the shore of the ocean… Inlets, beaches, etc. (not lakes of course) just as an added precaution.

Update
The Earthquake has been downgraded from 6.7 to 6.4 Magnitude. Still significant for our area.

The AVTimes has a report of folks in Tofino who headed for high ground as the shaking was taking place. Good job!

  1. I was on Mt Ozzard inside the Coast Guard’s Radar building at the time.  I can’t say it was intense shaking, but the floor sure looked interesting doing a ripple thing.

    1. Very cool Nick!

Hey… I may have asked you this before Nick.

Is there any possibility at all that that radar can be used for weather spotting?

I realize it’s not a doppler or anything and is on a different frequency, but it annoys me that there is such poor coverage on the Island and the West Coast in general.
And/or could there be a 2nd radar added to the installation for weather. The radar near Duncan is nearly useless because of where it is installed and the terrain around it.  It provides very little benefit over the Vancouver radar.Wouldn’t it be nice if they moved that radar out your way?  It would provide excellent coverage of anything coming at the entire West Coast.  I bet even the Americans would use it.What do you think?

  2. Chris, if I am not mistaken, the radar is either S-band or X-band, and is used for vessel tracking, so I assume its using metal reflection.  Having a Doppler up there for weather purposes would be neat.

  3. Chris/Nick, the radar on Mt Ozzard is X-band, and is used exclusively for vessel tracking. Now, having said that, for reasons I’m not aware of it seems to do a better job of tracking weather cells in the winter than it does the deep-sea ships. So we can usually tell when that next cell is gonna hit us.
