Juneuary Hits: Lots of Rain on the way

Monday, May 31st, 2010

In case you lost track, yes, Tuesday is June 1.

No, our weather has not been nice.

Yes, our weather has been colder and more wet than normal (for May).

And guess, what, Tuesday night and Wednesday will be even more wet. According to Bret Anderson at Accuweather this evening, and according to the map below, we can expect around 75mm of rain (300=3in=75mm).
June 1 storm map

Oh but wait, Bret had more good news for us today. Here’s one map he posted. There are more at his article.
Summer forecasts

It doesn’t get much better for the rest of June :(

So. Summer, currently, is not here yet and its not even in sight.

In case you forgot, on June 1 last year, we hit 29C. On June 5 we hit 35C. Oh how we love the weather.

Explosive Cyclonic Generation

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Words that will surely make the heart of any weather-geek beat a little faster.

That is how Mark Madryga described the low-pressure center and storm currently gathering force off the Washington Coast.

You can see it quite nicely on the Satellite imagery right now… curling into a nice tight hurricane-esque spiral. If your weekend plan was to leave a little early and head down the Inlet in a boat, you will definitely want to stay put for a day or two as Storm warnings are posted for West Vancouver Island South including Barkley Sound. SE and SW Winds to 50knots (90kph) will be happening tonight and into tomorrow.

Winds are not forecast to be as strong here in the Valley. We’re slated to get up to 60kph overnight. There is always the possibility that we get a little more than forecast. On the West Coast they have a wind warning up for winds up to 80kph tonight.

Looks like mother nature wants to remind us that Summer isn’t here just yet. Still have a little kick of Spring to give. Enjoy the wildness, take in your plants off the sundeck and make sure the greenhouse is closed up. :)

Happy Easter, A little more wind, and changing the view

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Happy Easter everyone.

The Easter Bunny has visited our place this morning. I hope he hopped over to your place too. And I hope those of you who are celebrated the more traditional Easter are enjoying it as well.

Weather-wise we will be having a little more wind and rain today. Nothing like Friday though. Of course, if you were in the City all day you probably didn’t notice anything! The wind came right out of the SE so the only thing I can figure is that our big mountain blocked it for us. Friends in Beaver Creek weren’t so lucky as the wind was able to swoop in over the Beauforts and cause some havoc. Still though, nothing like the Hurricane force (60knot/110kph) gusts they got on the East Coast (Saturna Island off Qualicum Beach, and in Mill Bay near Victoria.)

At some point, hopefully before the rain today. I will be heading up the ladder to do the seasonal cleaning of the station and switching of the Camera. The webcam can’t point at the sun, as it will burn in a spot in the lens, so now that the sun has risen enough in the sky I can swing it around to the South and get a nice view of downtown Port Alberni and the Inlet.

Batten down the Hatches

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Now for the real forecast. :)

There is a Wind Warning in Effect.

Here’s the Synopsis from Environment Canada.

I’ve added emphasis for us.

Start:

Inland Vancouver Island
4:08 AM PDT Friday 02 April 2010
Wind warning for
Inland Vancouver Island continued

Winds southeast 60 to 80 km/h expected today over much of Vancouver Island, the southern gulf island and the Sunshine Coast.

Winds southeast 50 to 70 km/h expected today over metro Vancouver.

This is a warning that potentially damaging winds are expected or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.

An intensifying pacific frontal system off the British Columbia coast is approaching Vancouver Island this morning. The associated low pressure centre is forecast to track across Central Vancouver island early this afternoon. Ahead of the low, winds are forecast to rise to southeast 60 to 80 km/h over most of the south coast. The low will then move into the interior this evening. In its wake, the winds will shift to the southwest and become very gusty through the evening.

Around when I was 10 or 11 I remember an Easter weekend when my parents were out for an Easter Lunch and my brother and I stayed home. It was crazy windy. We were watching TV, and all of a sudden heard this “crrraaaack”. And we watched a maple tree just off our property fall in towards us. Luckily it was far enough that it didn’t hit the house, but it did happen to fall right down the middle of a dogwood tree with a split trunk that “caught” it.

Won’t forget that. :)

Enjoy the Mother natures show tomorrow… stay safe.

New Forecast: Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Spring can sometimes really make for some weird weather. And today is definitely living up to that. The official forecast is out from Enviro Canada. I couldn’t write this stuff myself, so I’ll just quote what they said:

An intense frontal system will approach the British Columbia coast late today. The strongest winds will be over exposed sections of North Vancouver Island this afternoon. Unstable conditions will persist over the South and Central Island, strong winds along with heavy meatballs may produce localized damage. This is a warning that strong winds and heavy meatballs are imminent or occuring in your area. Please listen to local media for updates or contact your nearest Italian restaurant for extra spoons and forks.

Happy April Fools Day.

(And if you haven’t already seen it… the movie “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” is really silly and great)
