With Wind warnings out for the West and East coast of the Island it might be pretty easy for some people to turn off the lights and save some power tonight… there might not be any electricity flowing to turn off!
The winds aren’t slated to be huge, but there coould be enough gusts to knock down some trees and branches and take the lines down with it so the candles and flashlights and non-power-hungry activities you might have already planned for tonight might just come in handy!
The only electricity I plan on using during Earth Hour (between 8:30 and 9:30PM PDT) will be the computers that power my weather and energy sensors and upload to this website… all the hardware draws about 150W total. I’m going to be consolidating it to get that down under 100W in the next few weeks I hope.
If you want to monitor my energy consumption you can see it at www.murkyview.com. I’ll be posting a side-by-side comparison of my consumption last night (Friday) between 8:30 and 9:30PM with tonights consumption to see what difference it made.

Fascinating graph on Murkyview. I wonder what turned on for 15 minutes from 21:00 to 21:15? My son and I kept turning things off and running outside with flashlights to look at the hydro meter. It didn’t really slow down significantly until I cut the breakers for the fridge, hot water tank, and a 220 volt convection heater – then it almost came to a stop.

Ya absolutely. We have all electric baseboard heaters. I went around and turned them all down. We were wondering what that one was too. I think it is the baseboard in our spare bedroom, I didn’t turn it down as much as I thought I had so i think it went on. It’s either that or the one in my daughters bedroom.
The dip at 20:57 was our freezer! 300W! I couldn’t believe it (it’s a chest “dead body” freezer).
I’ll be analyzing more tomorrow… gotta go turn on our bedroom heater so the baby doesn’t freeze up.
