My final post about this topic… that ship that was caught in the storm in Alaska… sounds like it lost its steering, foundered and took on water in 30ft waves, and eventually flipped over. 7 crew of 11 made it to a lifeboat, but at some point the raft was tossed and only 4 remained to be rescued.

the alaskan fishery is indeed brutal. The big boats work so far offshore that running into safe harbour is not an option when bad weather hits. fortunately here in BC most of our commercial fishing grounds are fairly close to shore. Still, that doesn’t prevent at least one or two deaths a year.
So many things can go wrong out there, even when the weather is fine. Our groundfish trawl fleet lost a man on Sept. 27 when a piece of hardware broke during haulback. I’ve never looked up the statistics but in the 6 years I’ve been working on the groundfish trawl fleet, at least one person has died each year that I’ve been working at sea.
I’ve recently changed jobs.
