Hurricane Gustav

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

I’m not a religious person… but if I was, I’d be praying for the people of Cuba right now, and praying that Gustav doesn’t do too much damage to Louisiana and Mississippi.

It is already a Category 4, 150mph winds at the eyewall, 240km/h

There will be hurricane force winds reaching into Havana tonight.

I will be following closely, because I find it awe inspiring, Google Earth has incredible abilities for this, but we must not forget the human dimension to the story.

Hoping for the best…

UPDATE: 16:33 Just heard a thunderclap! Haven’t spotted any lightning yet though!

Wow! New RainRate Record!

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Wow… we had quite the cloudburst Monday Afternoon.

Recorded a rainrate of over 93mm/hr.

Should be drier tomorrow with another band of rain coming through tomorrow night and Wednesday.

If you’re looking for more exciting weather, check out Jeff Masters Wunderblog where he talks Hurricanes.

Unusual Autumn Storm in August

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Winds hit over 100km/hr on the West Coast yesterday and we got almost 20mm of rain.

Listening to CKNW on the way in and Mark Madryga mentioned that the weather was not normal for this time of year.

New Alberni Harbour Quay Webcam!

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

BigWaveDave.ca has installed a brand new webcam down at the Harbour Quay. If you’re not familiar with the site, BWD provides information for windsurfers up and down the Island. Our Inlet obviously gets a good amount of wind, so this camera will be very handy for them to check out to see if they should make the trip over the hump.

There’s a new link to the new camera under “Webcams”.

Thanks BigWaveDave!

UPDATE: Sorry for the delayed data. Looks like maybe my computers downstairs couldn’t take the heat yesterday afternoon. Not really sure what happened, but data should be flowing again here pretty quick.

Highlight that 35!

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Yowza… they’re calling for 35 on Friday! I didn’t have the website coded to highlight 35… you might want to get out the kiddie pool and just start lying it now so that you’re prepared for the weekend.

UPDATE: Oh.. now they’re only talking 34… phew… ;)

UPDATE 2: Oh, nevermind, they changed their minds again and it’s back to 35 tomorrow. Woohoo!
