Hey everyone!
I have exciting news! Last week an engineering company contacted me about gathering Solar Radiation data with my website.
They have offered to buy the sensor for the station. So I’ve gladly taken them up on the offer and I’ve also purchased a UV sensor to go along with it so we can know how fast we’re all gonna fry this summer!
Solar Radiation sensors (pyrometers) are useful for calculating the power emitted by the sun. (that makes it to the ground). The company will be using the data to calculate water temperatures in the Somass River as through funding provided by the BC Living Rivers Trust Fund with the BC Ministry of Environment.
So stay tuned! The sensors should be here in a couple weeks.
Update: Man it is *crazy* windy out there… been windy all afternoon. Must have been some Themal today. Hope the Wind Surfers got out on the Inlet to enjoy it!
Certainly seems like we’re entering a summer pattern. The winds in the afternoon have been quite something, sure wish I had a nice big wind turbine attached to my shed or something. :)
People have any big plans for the summer? I’m on vacation as of this week, so I’m excited, though we’ll be sticking close to home it always nice to be outside in the warmth and maybe even get some time in at Sproat Lake in a week or two if the weather stays warm.
Summer has officially been here 1.5 hours :D
We had a nice welcome with an unexpectedly warm afternoon!
Should be warm through the weekend. Make sure you lather on the sunblock! The ratings will be High and possibly Extreme in the next few days, so even if it’s a little overcast.
You may have noticed I reorganized the menu a little. I’ve alphabetized them and grouped the Webcam links. I’ve also added a link to Islandweather.cas’ “Forest Fire Threat” page. Very handy for camping, make sure those fires are out and the pit is wet before you leave the campsite! :D
UDPATE: BC Hydro Feedback Form on Site C Dam project.
Please Go to the form above and send in your feedback on creating a new dam on the Peace River. Given our energy situation (peak oil) I am in support of it as long as all the lessons of the last 30 years are followed) You can see their information page here.
Thanks for the new links Nick, I’ve added them in the Forecast section as well.
Also, if you go to the Port Alberni Weather Underground link (under forecasts, or just go to WUnderground and search for Port Alberni), you’ll notice the webcam is there now! They have some cool features… they create timelapse videos on the fly, so when you click you always get the last 24 hours. You can also compare the months images on a calendar at a specific time, noon, 1PM, 9AM… it’s nice.
Check it out.
