So yesterday there was “Earth Hour” between 8 and 9PM. DId you shut off your lights or turn off the TV?

As some might come to expect… I took it a little farther and convinced my wife to have an “Earth Day”. 🙂 We basically didn’t use anything electrical that wasn’t a basic need. Lights, TV, Computers all stayed off all day (which is why the website wasn’t fixed all day sorry 🙁 ).

We still baked some banana bread in the morning, and did one load of laundry. We spent lots of time outside with the kids… went for a walk between hail storms… After the kids went to bed, my wife and I listened to the radio and played Monopoly.

I tracked our consumption for THursday and Friday… we used 120 and 86kWh respectively. On Saturday, we used 69kWh. A difference of about 13kWh or 20%. Tha’ts quite a difference! If we reduced our consumption that much for an entire billing, we’d save about $80 per bill. (we’re billed every 3 months.)… or about $27/month.

In the end, I think Earth Hour was just as much about realizing all the simple things in life that we miss by focusing so much on our technology and “stuff”. We had a lot of fun yesterday. If every day was Earth Day, we’d do just fine.

  1. Chris,

  2. Chris, you cam pic is one hr behind and yet the hump road camp is on time – what’s up with that ??

  3. OH goodness, don’t get me started… i asked Stardot to send me a 3rd camera as the 2nd one kept freezing… and they sent me back my original one with the big sun streak!

It has older firmware.. thus the bad time.

    I’ll fix that later today.

  4. Yes, it is much better! I had to wait for the Sun to move high enough so that it wouldn’t burn a streak into the camera (that already happened once, you can see it there in the image).

Now that it has, I moved the camera a little so the eave isn’t covering the top, which means the exposure is a lot better now and the overall image of the sky is great.

    Thanks!

    Chris
