It seems to be unanimous… we’re going to get some snow over the next few days. How Much? EC says 5-10cm tomorrow… will we get that? More? Less? All Weekend? Will there be school on Monday?

Who knows!

All we can do is wait for the white fluffies to start falling from the sky.

Update: (Jan 29,12:42PM)
Finally!! We got lots of snow. There was about 18cm, 8″ this morning when I woke up. (6th and Redford). There is apparently lots more out at the lake… over a foot (30cm) by some accounts.

To answer Cindy in the Comments… the snow has stopped, and the major streets in Port Alberni are plowed and wet now. The sun has come out, so it has melted what was left from the scrape.

You may notice that the Weather Camera has changed slightly. I have installed a filter (ND2 Gradual Grey) that has made the picture much brighter! I’ve also received my replacement camera (because I burned the lens of the first one… those are the pink streaks you see).

A wonderful day! Hope everyone enjoys the snow and sun! I know my kids are enjoying it!

  1. Strange, the east Island at temps of between +2 – +4 are expecting 2-4cm of the white stuff today and have a warning issued. We are ‘expecting 10 – 15 and are below 1 (at this time anyway) and have no warning.
Right now it’s snowing very lightly you have to look very hard to see the the flakes 🙂

  2. 15 is the limit for us to have a warning according to Anne at EC… i don’t know if we’ll even get any now.. not much moisture out there. Lots down in Seattle. Not much here.

  3. Looks like the forecasters didn’t know what they were talking about. I see this morning that they were surprised that a front from the south brought warm air. Did they think the front would bring cold air? I’m really getting frustrated with these snowfall warnings and nothing happens.

  4. Ya… they really seem to have become very conserative/careful with their forecast. Expecting the worst, and it hasn’t really happened this year for them.

  5. We got a couple of centimeters of the white stuff…maybe 3 out at the lake. I’m getting frustrated too. My husband calls me a weather freak 🙂

  6. I wonder if they will put out a snowfall warning for Tuesday. My girlfriend calls me a weather dork.

  7. My wife calls me a weather geek… luckily slowly turning her into one too. 🙂

They’re calling for 5-10 again for us… we’ll see if the temps stay down… I was checking out the “Cold Wave” warning for the interior… Windchills below -35!

  8. Yeah, pretty brisk alright! My sister called from Toon town this morning, -49 with blizzard conditions. Just a tad chilly for me.

  9. god… -49… YUK

dan: i don’t know of one, there is probably a general one… if you find one let me know!

  10. The only facebook weather groups for this area that I found were kristi gordon and mark madryga are hot groups.

  11. So i put the Neutral Density filter on the camera today and it’s made a huge difference. You’ll notice right now, that even though the light is dimming, the houses are still visible and the sky is sharp even with clouds.

that’s cuz the filter is dark on top and clear on bottom… so it tones down the brightness from the sky and allows me to open up the iris, which allows more light so everything is brighter!

    Very happy! 😀

  12. BTW: I added a Temperature Trend indicator on the Temp boxes on this page and the frontpage.

It’s based on change in the latest 5 minutes.

  13. I also added links to the Intellicast Radar under Weather Charts… and links to other Island city forecasts and Vancouver under EC forecasts.

  14. Snowing lightly here, it started just before 8.

I noticed the arrow beside the temp, was going to ask what that was.

And I did look at your cam before it got dark…it made a huge difference.

  15. Chris, you may want to change ‘Vancouber’ in your links 😉

Great idea having all those links in one place!

  16. You need a light behind the camera to see whats happening at night!! But I wouldn’t want to be your neighbour lol

  17. Ha! I was thinking the same thing earlier this evening Dan! I love it when our neighbor puts their outside light on when it’s snowing, saves me getting up every 10 minutes 😉

  18. I just saw on the news that schools are cancelled in Port except for Provincial exams. Here in Nanaimo we have maybe 5cms. But I live down at Departure Bay and we don’t get much snow here, or so that’s what my girlfriend tells me who has lived here longer than I have lol.

  19. I just di measurement & we’ve got 7inchs…the highway isn’t totally clear…hard compact. Yep, schools are closed. Buses aren’t running.

  20. We have 18cm (8in) in my yard… called it into Environment Canada.

All schools are closed, as is Malaspina and NIC.

    WEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

  21. Well !!! Hello Chris it’s about time you got some of the white stuff in a measurable amount -HA !! Today I have your weather norm (36 F – rain and gray over cast and you got my normal-SNOW ) PA vers PA – but 3500 plus miles apart – ENJOY !!

  22. I have to drive in to Port Alberni today… are the roads plowed? Is it still snowing? How much accumulation have you received? If anyone can tell me that…it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
